installing causes computer to freeze?

I have a Nec ND-3550A dvd/cd drive. I just built this computer a couple days ago and when i go to install stuff my computer it sometimes freezes,which is absolutly unacceptable with what i have in my computer. The mouse locks up, and i can't bring up device manager, so i have to press reset button. This usually occurs when im running things in the background such as aim, or IE but my computer should defnitly be able to handle it. I don't really have to much info on this sitiuation right now but I would defnily like to get this resolved so i can load up WoW without it freezing on me. Also i have only noticed it freezing when im installing something. and i havent had the chance to game on this bad boy yet becuase it keeps freezing. i have the updated video drivers still locks up.

AMD 64 4000
120 GB WD SATA HD
7800 GT eVga
1 gig geil ram
ASUS A8N-SLI Mobo

what are the temps and voltages?

everything is fine 32 C =CPU 29C=mobo i have a 550 watt antec PSU so im not worried bout power
