USB mass storage device cannot stop

My thumb drive will not stop so I can remove it from my XP Home computer. I use OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 for my word processor and it loads as part of my startup menu. The solution is to use Ctrl + Alt + Del and stop the program soffice.exe. Then the USB mass storage device will stop and can be removed.

your USB drivers updated?

Is it a cheap Thumb Drive?

It is a PNY 512 MB thumb drive. I get regular Windows updates. The last time I checked with PNY they had no newer drivers. When OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 is not part of the startup menu the thumb drive can be stopped just fine. If it is in the startup menu, I have to close soffice.exe before the USB mass storage device can be stopped.
