He doesn't need a monitor. Other than that it seems to be what I was thinking+floppy,os,opt drive, etc.

You could probably get away with getting a cheaper sound card if you want to upgrade something else.

Thats a nice setup. That 17" LCD monitor will be good. 17 inchers have a clearer picture and look better at 1024x768 than do 19 inchers, which is a must for gaming.
