ive noticed that a maxtor hard drive (specifically a 300gb model) is noticeably cheaper then any competetition, yet seems to even have a larger cahce size (16mb instead of the usual 8)

why is this is? are there drives more prone to faults?

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I heard from somebody who works at BB, that the Maxtor's are returned w/problems 10 to 1 over the other drives they sell. I have a Maxtor 160gig HD that I've had for about a year and a half now w/no problems so personally, I have nothing bad to say about them.

They made it cheaper to produce there Hard drives than anyone else. They sell less HDs than other but make more profit.
I think they did it about 2 years ago or later.
