Yeah I don't see the ungodly rush for them as needed. The X2s are just as good and are cheaper in some cases. If there is no intention for overclocking there is no need for a Opterton over a X2.

The Opteron has bigger L2 cache, it has a total of 2MB at a lower price then the X2 4400+

Sure compair any Opteron to the 4400+ lets get processors that are the same prices or at least close and then compair with no regard to overclocking.

It does seem like with the Opterons not OC'ing like they were, there isn't a whole lot going for them any more.

At Newegg an x2 3800 is $325
An Opteron 170 is $420

Both are dual cores at 2.0GHz each.

The Opteron has double the cache.

Even with double the cache, the Opteron is going to need to be a pretty good OC'er to make the near $100 bigger price tag worth it.

Opterons are still tested more extensively than Athlon processors therefore they're shipped with a "higher" fabrication grade and a superior memory controller...most people have been able to squeeze high frequencies on their memory using Opterons after switching from Athlons

Of course if you aren't overclocking, an Opteron would be a rather silly investment as clock for clock it's equal to an Athlon and AMD has mandated that only specific server grade boards (eg Tyon) officially support them
