What do you back-up with

I want to learn how to back up my hard drive. It is gettign older and I don't want to lose my stuff. What are you useing to keep it backed up?

Well, if the data you want to back-up is less then 4.7 GIG's then you could use a DVD-BURNER. You could also install an additional HDD and copy data and transfer it over to the new HDD.

If you're talking about 10 to 90GIG's you could invest in a REV DRIVE. Which when you use the right software can be scheduled to backup your specified data every night.

so far im using a 120gb secondary hard drive for movies

just recently i bought a 200gb hard drive that isn't open yet
but thats definitely for backup or for a new computer

OK what is needed to Install

an External hard drive? Is it a usb hook up and just plug it in? I have a PC. What disadvantages of External harddrive for back up files?

I usually backup in reverse................ I use a USB Western Digital 200 Gig. Zero disadvantages. Because it goes to USB 2.0 the transfer reate is a little slower but not really terribly noticeable.

i backup using linux live-cd's. i seem to get a faster file transfer. i just use the live-cd to access all my partitions, create a backup folder and copy everything i want into that folder and burn a data dvd.
