Master/Slave

What is the deal with this Master/slave thing. Is this just for hard drives, and if so is it just for RAID configuration? I also saw someone post that SATA is set to be a slave automatically, and windows can't be loaded onto it. If i have only one SATA harddrive, will windows still work?

When you have 2 drives on a single IDE channel 1 needs to be master and 1 slave, the Slave is usally a CD-ROM or extra storage the Master is usally the boot Device, such as a Harddrive with an OS on it.

SATA is actualy Standing by itself. Only 1 drive per SATA channal/Cable so there is no master/slave settings for them.

You can have windows on a SATA Harddrive it doesn't matter.
