Hi

Ive recently put XP onto my old p3 machine. (This was a totally fresh format and xp install).

I've had my machine running smoothly for a week or so, but now when windows starts "Please wait while windows loads..." into the welcome screen, it is very very slow. It takes about 5-10 until the point where I can login.

This is also the same when I try to shutdown. It gets past "Saving user settings" to the "Windows is shutting down" but takes about 10 mins to actually turn off.

Ive tried loading in safe mode, the welcome screen takes just as long, but its a little quicker to shutdown.

All the software / drivers are the newest, all windows updates etc. done, also a new BIOS update.

Ive tried defrag c: -b and stopping the terminal services, but this makes no change.

The only thing which I could think was I removed the language bar (from office) following a microsoft page, but I cant see how this would make any affect.

Its very weird cos this is a fresh install

The specs are, 450mhz p3, acer motherboard, on board video/sound, 200mb ram, 20gb hdd - about 12gb free
Any ideas?

Its 450mhz (but I have safely oc'd it to around 850). I have tried it without the overclock and its just as slow.

BTW, this "slowdown" problem has only just started happening - its been fine for about a week

Theres nothing really in the log.

Go into msconfig and disable everyting you don't want starting on start up.

use Disk Defragmenter and disk clean up.

Also download regseeker and run that.

I have only the things i want in startup (virus scanner/spyware scanner and 3dfx tools).

Ive just finished a defrag on both drives, but it hasnt done anything.

I'll have a look at regseeker. Is it a registry cleaner or something?

I may try a windows repair?

how much RAM does it have and how fast is the RAMs transfer rate? This might not matter due to the fact that you said its been working for a week
