My friend's building a system but he wants to keep his old HDD. He's going from Intel to AMD and I was wondering if there were going to be any problems with the HDD.

Not neccesarely. Just hook it up and maybe it will boot.
I moved from Pentium 200 to Pentium 2 400 and then to AMD 1600+ with the same install. Worked fine.

I have nil software experience. How will he do a repair? He's not very computer-literate (he's not dumb either) and I can't be there with him.

If Windows won't boot I would boot from the install disc, press R to enter recovery console. Use a few commands like chkdsk /p, Fixboot and BootCFG /Rebuild and it mostly works. If not you can install Windows without choosing the option to format. You may loose the My Documents files this way, though. Just backup everything on another hard disk or CD-ROM's before moving to the new system.
