I'm trying to fix a labtop that had a .dll renamed and now can't boot.

I'm using XP recovery disks to go in and re-rename the .dll however there is a screen for the Administrative password. The owner has no clue what it is, and thus I can't proceed forward.

I really do not want to try and take it apart and use it as a slave drive on a PC to rename the .dll since I've never done anything like that with a labtop...

So is there any way around this password?

Did this person set the password then forget it ?

if not, try Administrator and Admin
The defaulted username is Administrator or Admin right ?

You can use the Linux Kernal to get around it. You can download the program onto a bootable cd and change the administrator password.... Unfortunately I don't remember what it's called, and I can't find out until Monday... Sorry :(

Tried Administrator, didn't think of Admin, will try that now...

Nope doesnt work :(

The specific .dll that got screwed was kernel32

Im not sure if they set it or not... it's been a few years.

TY, downloading now... any specific instructions that the program doesnt go over?

By boot CD, do you mean just the ISO? or do I need to put it on a recovery disc one?
