if 100mbs is ten times faster than 10mbs, then 1000mbs is ten times faster than 100mbs. Depending upon how much bandwidth you need, this can be overkill or just what you need.
Do most cheap, off the shelf switches support Gigabit speeds?
no, typical are 10/100 switches. your switch must be able to handle gigabit speed for you to take advantage of it. you also must have the correct cable. CAT5 will not work. i think you would either need CAT6 or 7

I have been informed by a college teacher/Freelancing Network tech that the Gigabit Ethernet is not as fast as advertised and it's not worth it at all currently. She did say that eventually there will be true speeds like that, but the testing they did was a joke and is boarderline false advertising.
