I'm building a new machine, but I'm very new at this and need some advice. I'm looking to spend somewhere around $1500. Here's what I've put together so far:

MB: ASUS 865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU
Cost: $130

CPU: Intel Pentium 4/ 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology
Cost: $230

RAM: Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
Cost: $170 (Each chip is $85. getting 2 for 1GB)

CD1: LITE-ON BLACK 16X DVD ROM Drive
Cost: $36

CD2: Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive
Cost: $37

Video: ATI RADEON 9800XT Video Card, 256MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP
Cost: $461

Sound Card:Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 PCI Sound Card
Cost: $74

Case w/ Power Supply: Chieftec Black Server Case with 450W Power Supply
Cost: $95

HD: Seagate 120GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive
Cost: $96

OS: Windows XP Pro
Cost: $200

TOTAL SYSTEM COST SO FAR: $1529

Questions

1) Where's a good online guide to building your own computer?

2) Does all this stuff fit inside my computer case?(I'm newb)

3) Does the Corsair RAM fit inside the RAM Bus on the MB?

4) Any of these parts have you personally had a bad experience with?

5) What should I do for cooling on this computer? I honestly have no idea O_O

6) What am I missing for the Hard Drive? Network Card? Floppy Drive? /shrug

good looking computer. 2 things though: you might want to spend a few extra dollars and get some better RAM, maybe Corair 1gb twinx for $207. value select RAM is just not that good (keyword "value"). BTW dimitri that system will work with ddr perfectly. cooling, your probably fine with the retail fan that comes with the cpu. as for your vid card, i dont think anyone really needs the 9800 xt, especially with 9800 pros going for low $200s now. with the extra 200 get yourself some speakers or something.
i would also checkout pricegrabber.com for cheaper prices. you might save enough for a 3.2ghz ($270)

ok a little more than 2 things. good luck

i recommend you do not get the corsair value select RAM. corsair XMS memory and 256MB x 2 would be a better choice (512MB total).

Id really suggest getting a bare bones machine since it looks like your starting from scratch.Computer maker's buying in bulk can bring prices way down from what you can find on web site's.

When you buy your hardrive find one that will let you buy XP pro as OEM version.

Id stick with your onbroad sound card and get Z 680 speaker's.

Id also get the 2.8 instead of the 3.0 processor.

To me spending over 400 for a video card is crazy.Id really sugest a 9800 pro or lower card or waiting a few month's and getting the next new thing.

For the HD look at the deals at CompUSA, they will probably have another HD deal nex sunday. Good price is normally down to $79.99 or $69.99..
