Its just about the same thing. It depends on which stepping the opteron has. The better stepping will overclock the best.

I would go for the athlon 3700. It's a lot better for games and can be overclocked more and is generally cheaper so an all over good for the athlon Main rule
use AMD 64 if your going to play games
Use Intel if your going to do intensive things like video editing

AMD pritty much rules the processor market for me. AMD 64's run cooler are faster on games and aree usally quiter as they don't require large fans.

the opteron is like the same exact thing as the san diego, the only difference is the opteron has gone through more extensive testing because sometimes it is usually used in servers, which wuold be s940 with the ECC mememory but this is s939 for home made servers, it most likely is a san diego core tested more and changed the name to venus

ONLY difference between 3700+ San Diego and 148 Venus, the Opteron overclocks higher.
