Hey ive recently been looking into some 5.1 headphones. my on board sound doesnt support it so i need a new sound card. my quesion is there a difference between 5.1 surround cards and regular 5.1 any help would be great thanks.

5.1 means it has two front speakers, a center channel, a sub, and two surround. no matter if it says "5.1 surround" it should be the same as regular 5.1.

What he said and dolby is one of the thing's that sound card decodes.

On my Audigy 2 Z's you can select the type of speaker's your listening too from 2.1 (2 speaker's) - 7.1 (7 speaker's + base usualy). You can even just select Headphones.

Some speaker's have decoder's. Were you really dont need a upgraded sound card.Your on board card would be fine.

Someone going from 2 gateway 2000 speakers i bought in 1992 and an internal sound card.Is mind blowing the sound coming from my puter now.
