AA and AF?

Hey guys i noticed when i play my pc games there's things called Anti-Aliasing and Antistropic Filtering. I know that the higher setting it is on, the better, but i was wondering, what do they exactly do? Is there a big difference from 4xAA and 8xAF to 2xAA and 8xAF. If you have any knowledge on the subject, i'd greatly appreciate it.

It optimizes the image (uses calculations to make it look better).
I set mine to good settings and if aa af is possible I turn it on (I usually leave it off)
