I have a problem, well I don't its my aunts computer, we get this error when the computer starts up, a blue screen with white text:

Stop:C0000218 [Registry File Failure]
The registry cannot load the hive(file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software
or its log or alternate.

Beginning Dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete.

Then it stays there, the computer wont turn off...anyone have any idea how to fix this???

There is one fix to this problem to my knowledge.... its nothing but the Software registry hive had gone bad....

You will have to boot the system from the recovery console disk and first rename the \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software and then copy it from the repair folder back to its location.. If this does not work consider loading windows again

What do you mean by "boot the system from the recovery console disk and first rename the \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software and then copy it from the repair folder back to its location"

Should i just do a system restore?

i have a similar problem.

So I reboot to the XP cd, press R, it takes me to a black screen with white type asking me "Which windows installation would you like to log onto.

All I see is this, 1: C:\WINDOWS

So, what do I do now?

If I type "1", I get this, "C:\WINDOWS"

I am so lost, what do I do next. Please walk me through this like I am an idiot.
