Computer sometimes freezes when running webcam

Either just privately running it, usually at night (in low light) or trying to run a webcam in MSN messenger.

If it DOES work, it freezes shortly thereafter or when I try to open another program like Windows Media Player.

I can still use the mouse and close other programs, but MSN messenger does not respond and ctrl+alt+delete end tasks do nothing. I cannot turn off/restart/etc either.

Do I need more RAM (256), is my system overheating (I have 1 small fan on graphics card, small fan on mobo, and 1-2 small case fans), or do you smell software problems?

true orb,, what are your system specs ? proc,video card etc Let us know. and we will give suggestions

If your system does not freeze without the webcam and that too if it just happens when the lights are low.. try to reinstall the webcam - and try to see if there is an updated driver for the webcam..
