Lately, my computer has been running a process or something every 15 minutes or so that always causes my screen saver to turn off. It is really annoying and I don't want my screen saver to turn off all the time.

When this process runs it open a task in the Windows taskbar for around 1-2 seconds. The icon on the left of that taskbar button is just a blank window, not like an IE icon or anything. How can I figure out what process this is and how to stop it?

I use the following programs very frequently and fixed any problems they have found:

Ad-Aware
Spy Bot
AVG Antivirus
Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Spywareblaster

you may want to check your existing software to see if they are trying to update on a timer or some such thing.

you can try running TrendMicro's Virus Scan off their website http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
note: it requires Microsoft Internet Explorer

I don't think any software is trying to update as I always turn off automatic updates and do them myself so that they don't annoy me so much. I also ran TrendMicro's Virus Scan and it found and removed 31 tracking cookies that other programs didn't find. Hopefully that fixed the problem. I'll post again if it comes back. Thanks!

Name the other programs you have. also, post a hijackthis log, its possible there is something in there. I might be in there anyways because it will become an object within IE, just like acrobat updater.

Process explorer from sysinternals.com will show any process and where they are running from. Watch the screen on process explorer and you should see it run.

Here is my Hijackthis log and other programs I have in my taskbar:

iTunes
AIM
Zone Alarm
Ding (Southwest Airlines)
Post-It Note Lite Software

You have a AVG update service running
HP software update service

You need to disable all your items in msconfig except the ones you need running like your AV. Does the SW Airlines update for anything?

I would disable everything, reboot, turn on the screen saver and see what happens. If you dont turn off, your problem is in msconfig somewhere

How do I delete that entry??

I think it is the HP software update that is doing this because I recently updated the update software. I can't figure out how to turn off the automatic updates for it though. Any ideas?

disable it in msconfig

or

Delete it from hijack this

When yo scan your system with hijackthis!, just put a check mark in the entry you want to remove and remove it
