Brand new to these forums. I'm planning on building a new rig when I get home from this deployment in the sandbox, and was just looking for some commentary/critique/advice/part substitutions on what I have picked out so far. All of the parts are going to be ordered from Newegg, and I'm looking at a 1500-1600 budget (Current configure puts me at 1600.75 with shipping.) It's meant to be a gaming platform with the room for a small amount of overclocking in the future. I have only built a few PCs in the past. Component list:
Mobo: ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 - Retail

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ ADA4200BVBOX - Retail

GFX: XFX PVT70GUDF7 Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 - Retail

HD: HITACHI Deskstar 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s - OEM (x2, gettting two of these)

DVD: NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A - OEM

Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 530 RC-530-SWR2 Black w/ 430W Power Supply - Retail

The only component I'm really worried about is the case w/ PSU. I'm trying to skimp and save money, but am really considering going with a coolermaster wavemaster coupled with an antec psu but that puts me over my budget by close to 100 bucks. Any suggestions that will keep me within my budget without hurting performance?

For a start, out of personal experience, I would stay away from XFX, due to my card dieing after only 10 months.

Seagate and Western Digital are the best HDD companies. Go with what ever one you can get cheaper. They are equally good.

Get cheap ram. Just make sure it is 2x 1gb sticks.

And I can't stress enough how important a good PSU (like Antec) is.

Get what ever case you like, you will always end up getting it further down the line anyway, and will have to pay more postage.

if you arent going with the 4400+ then go with the 3800+ cause they are exactly the same the 4200 and the 3800 just clockspeed is different

^^XFX sucks, go with eVGA leadtek gigabyte BFG MSI you see

i would go with a DFI board or MSI board

get a seagate hdd :D

7200 RPM!!! Pretty good. Maybe get a bigger Hard drive but 250 is enough.

He is exactly right. The 4200+ is just a 3800+ with a 200mhz faster clock which you can OC a 3800+ past easy.

I also would suggest a WD or Seagate HD. I have a seagate and would'nt have anything else.

seagate is numero uno....i went through 3 wd....put in a seagate...had it for 3 yrs runnin strong still....
good mb...go with 3800+ like everyone says
get a strong strong psu...don't go ghetto and cheap..antec is real good and i reccomend the neoHE 550W...
go with eVGA card....BFG is good...eVGA little better in my opinion...just read some reviews on the parts and know bug issues n stuff...also stick with good ram not cheap..cheap will not get the gaming job done...good psu and ram n cpu are the core items....
