budget video encoding rig

ok so i have a p4 1.7 and i use various programs to encode dvd's to my psp, ipod video and so on. it takes quite a while to encode so i was hoping for some advice on a budget system. i searched but couldnt really find wat i wanted. these are the items i have chosen so tell me wat u think.

If you want to encode, go with Intel, not AMD

encoding uses some serious resources...i would get atleast 2gb ram
i also noticed u have ddr2 ram chosen (front intel board i assume) and u need DDR 400 (PC 3200)
i disagree with who ever is above me...i think amd wins in every possible scenario except cheap office/school computers

...and I disagree with the person above me. If this was not a budget rig, I would say plop in an Opteron, and you'll get some good performance. But it's on a budget. The hyperthreaded P4's win here...

depends on how big his budget is...better to go good now instead of so-so now and good later...u spend more in long run...jsut save up as i will

2 gigs of ram is extrenuous. I'm sorry. He said budget. 2 gigs just isn't necessary yet. Maybe he can get another gig later, but for now, 1gb of ram will MORE THAN suffice. You should pay 2.5 times more for ram that you're going to see a 15% increase in encoding speed. I'm an AMD guy, but I put in a vote for a Hyper Threaded P4. Aim for around a 3.0ghz prescott P4.

The motherboard and processor sockets don't match. Go for a Socket 775 Pentium 4.
