how would i use a boot disk for windows 98? just type in A:\setup.exe?

(i went to bootdisk.com and downloaded the program and extracted the files to floppy)

No, since your system wont boot from CD, you need to boot off cd for it. Put in the floppy and boot off that into DOS. Type this in:

CD d:\win98
setup.exe

Then it should run the Win98 setup

i couldnt get the computer fixed today, as my friend was busy today

im hoping to fix it tomorrow, and i'll use your advice and try to access the D drive through DOS

just another question...

what if it doesnt pick up the D drive, or thinks it doesnt exist (dont forget, this is from 1995)

it should as long as you have dos boot disk with the cdrom driver (mscdex).

the computer is really screwed up, i will have to tell my friend to get a tech to fix it, or buy a newer (1998) PC

Tell your friend to get A new PC. it sounds like that old machine will not give your friend much joy even if you DO manage to boot 98' onto it
