My DVD-ROM in my laptop will not read any DVD. WHen I put one in, it just says insert disc....I tried formatting the computer and updating the driver for the drive, still no luck, any ideas?

I should add, these are deal DVD's not burned.

Try cleaning the Laser. You can get an optical drive cleaning kit.

Otherwise, it does sound like the Laser is not it's way out.

Try installing PowerDVD. It includes some drivers that has fixed a lot of problems for me. You can get PDVD6 on download.com.

Is the drive also a cd rom or burner ? if you put in a cd like your XP CD will it open up the cd , or can you see the cd and open the dir in windows explorer ? You say you formatted the HD and I guess reinstaklled XP ( you have xp or what ? ) do you have a second cd rom drive or did you use the DVD drive ? Do you see the DVD drive in your PCs bios ? What about in control panel , system , hardware, devices...does it exist there to, no red Xs or exclamations point.?

Reinstall windows. I had this problem once on a customer computer. I did a million thing to try to fix the problem. he had no virus or spyware. yet reinstalling windows fixed the problem
