my mate gave me an old rm machine his mum got from her school, who were going to skip them anyway.

it is an old pIII beast, with an ati rage pro gfx card.

i tried overclocking, and pushed it from 450 to 623. it got quite hot, but i could still keep my finger on the heatsink. speedfasn does not work properly on the comp, as it shows its only temp reading as -199C

my question:

if i pushed it too far, what do pIII's do? will it just turn off, and probably be damaged, or will it actually catch fire? my parents are worried it may burn down the house.

thanks in advance

it will get too hot and either turn itself off or keep restarting until the cpu burns out. It wont catch on fire though.

so it should be ok to push it further then?

what should i use as a guide, seeing as it does not have a working temp sensor? i dont really want to kill it.
