Have you installed SP2 and suddenly....no external HD, DVDrw, USB mem. stick etc? Micorsoft in fixing one problem...created another! It was easy for users in network systems to connect a device (USB-key or MP3 player etc.) to the USB post of a workstation and copy things off the system...so MS, serving the needs of the many at the expense of the individual (in this case, rightly so!!!) fixed this security problem in SP2. Problem.......single users now get the following error message with their own external USB devices: "Usb device not recognized". Look familiar? There is a fix!

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to the Key_Local_Machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Control key,
3. If there is no key called: StorageDevicePolicies, create it (My SP2 s embedded and does not contain this key). You do this by right-clicking the Key_Local_Machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Control key, and selecting New > Key form the menu.
4. Select the StorageDevicePolicies key (you just created it).
5. From the menu select: Edit > New > DWORD Value
6. Name the new value: WriteProtect
7. Right-click the WriteProtect value and choose Modify
8. In the Value Data: box enter 0
9. Exit the registry editor and restart your puter.

This fix enables windows to recognize all USB devices and by passes the SP2 security fix.

Now I have a headache!!!!!
