why do processes such as explorer.exe and svchost.exe use so much memory? On my computer, explorer.exe uses 32,000-52,000 kb and svchost.exe uses about 32,000 kb. I remember when I first took my computer home and turned it on, explorer.exe used like 15,000 kb. THis is just a question out of curiosity.:D

it's due to all the other programs that run under each one of those. All the apps in the taskpane, also all the services that run with some programs also cause this.

You can download Process Explorer (from www.sysinternals.com) and run it. That will show you what is running under each program.

Good luck

Explorer is the Windows GUI. Its internet explorer, windows explorer, the start menu, everything more or less. Closing down explorer.exe when your computer is struggling can help. If you close it down you can always rerun it buy clicking add task and type in explorer.exe .
