Power splitters - do they cause hdd to catch on fire?

Are there any problems with them, as my dvd drive stopped working after plugging in a floppy drive - with a power splitter. And my HDD caught on fire when using the adapter for the power.

All the splitters came with my fully modular Hiper type R 580w PSU.

wow, that' the first time I've heard of that happening just from a power splitter.
I think it would have to do with the state of the splitter, hard drive, PSU, or a combination of them. it is not exactly normal for that to happen.
 
it was like gas the fire, just a flame rolling around the top of it, and going out, leaving a bit on the circuit board glowing very brightly where the cause was and it had white and black crap on it. and a room full of smoke that smelt disgusting.

Luckily Seagate say they will get a replacement to me within 2 - 5 days (says on the site.)


I want to know what caused it though. The splitter's wires are the correct way round. the PSU was a cheap one, but it didn't take out any of his h/w...
