the size of a grain of rice is a little thin for what I saw... I'd definately go with 1 1/2 almost 2. That's about right.

The point in putting some on is if you dont like the stock grease that comes on most hsfs, or if you want a few degrees less on the CPU because of better thermal transfer...... Plus not all hsfs come with thermal paste....
