ATI is selling X800 Pro 256MB for around 30 dollars more than the 6600 GT I'm going to buy. Granted it's a refurbed one, but still. Should I get the 6600GT or the X800 pro?

On a man to man basis, I would get the x800 pro. I think they run a little hotter, but I think they're a more powerful video card.

if i had to choose, i would choose the 6600GT even if the x800pro was a better card, cause the GT has the SM3 and is better. as in drivers, and other stuff.

6600 GT beats the X800 Pro in most cases except in the Source engine where the X800 Pro has a major advantage. Unless you are a religious CSS player, get the 6600 GT for it is much better, or better yet, get the 6800 vanilla. The 6800 is cheap these days and blows away the 6600 GT and the X800 Pro. Believe me, I have an X800 Pro and am not happy with it at all.

You should be comparing the X800GT and the 6600GT. Not the X800Pro.

i'm in the same kind of situation.. i'm thinking of building a new system to handle games a little better (plan on getting 3000+ with ddr400 and a decent mobo) and i was wondering if the extra pixel pipes the x800 has is a big factor or not in deciding between the 6600GT and the x800?

ATI is promising new OpenGL drivers with Catalyst 5.11 that will make ATI cards as good as Nvidia in OpenGL. I will believe it when I see it, but if its true, then it will increase the value of the X800 Pro tremendously.

Besides not having Shader Model 3, what makes the X800 Pro such a bad card is that it chokes at rendering dynamic shadows. This isn't necissarily a hardware fault, but an ATI driver problem that they are notorious for. With ATI promising a 35-40% increase in Doom 3 performance with Catalyst 5.11...maybe we are about to see the light on this long ongoing problem with ATI hardware.
