DVD writer drive freeze!

I'm borrowing my dads external dvd/rw drive so that I can back my work up. When I plug it into my computer it freezes the whole computer.

I am using xp, and I hear the bleep that xp plays when it detects the usb input. its just when I open 'my computer' to view the drive, it isn't there, nor is it present as an option in nero as a recorder, but as soon as I have viewed a place where it should be (like 'my computer') it takes about 15 seconds then locks up the whole computer.??

Any ideas?

drivers? do you have the drivers for it installed?

Yeah phillip is right... Check your device manager for any error icons. you may have to update the controller.

What service pack do you have? If your not running SP2, i suggest you upgrade and perform all the patches from microsoft, then see if the problem persists.

Try plugging it in before you start the computer. That may not be the problem but I remember having the same problem with scuzzy drives back in the day.
