by the way, is thermal paste necessary when you're not looking to overclock? i've heard it's not as the heatsink plus fan will do fine by themselves.

You can use a thermal pad, but a high quality paste is best. Just don't use too much, or it defeats the purpose.

The paste or pad go between the Hs/Fan and the processor. You have thermal paste there right now, that's how the heat transfers from the processor to the HS/fan. What you're asking is if you need to upgrade that paste to a more high quality paste. I say if your processor is running fine, and you are not overclocking, there is no need to put new, better quality thermal paste on. All the paste does is lower the temp. of your processor a degree or two by transfering the heat better. You don't need to worry about that unless you are overclocking.

hmmm ,,, looking back at your actual question,,

you DO need thermal paste,, the reason ,, it is the conductor of the heat ,, away from the cpu and into the Heat Sink,,

to keep the heat sink cool,, a CPU fan is connected to it,, the fan draws cooler air into the Heat sink and blows the heated air away from the CPU,,

Is it important? YES!
Conductivity is your best friend when heat dissipation comes into question,,

If you want to keep you PC running smoothly,, PASTE it!

Pads are OK,,, but past is better,,
