how to detect a bad hard drive?

If the hard drive is toast...they are cheap! Go to www.Newegg.com and get one at a very good price!

why dont you stick it in the freezer? they said that works sometimes. try sticking it in a freezer bag for about 30 minutes and stick it back in and reformat. search for this on TF, its been covered once with some good results. im not sure if its this in your case. but try it

Maybe the cd-drive or disc is damaged, old or slow.
