unexpected key keeps appearing in input fields

I have a dell latitude 600 - about 5 years old -
on startup I will sometimes get audio beeps -
but most of the time the system will boot -
the # 3 will kepp appearing in input fields or word documents - the system will then start beeping incessantly (buffer overflow)
can anyone tell me what is causing the # 3's to repeat - keyboard need replacing -

help is most appreciated
