What's a cheap, quiet low end CPU ?

I'm looking for a very quiet CPU / HSF for a low end system for my brother to use...

I'm looking at the Athlon Thunderbirds / Pentium III's.

Has anyone had experience with these before? If so, are they quiet? I just want the least noise as possible. Oh and, what are some popular motherboards that support the T-birds / P3's ? I'm looking to buy them used...

agreed. If nothing else, buy everything like the heatsink and processor, then replace the fan on the heatsink with a newer aftermarket one. It's the fans that make the noise...

I would suggest getting an AMD Duron 1.2. I had one up until I got my P4 2.6, and I loved it. It's a very powerful CPU.

As for the noise, get an aftermarket fan and heatsink.

The only problem's I had with my Duron was heating problems. It ran at a steady 60C, which is high, but it still ran good. 61C it would reset.
