My max price is now confirmed at $3500. I've also been able to get a really cheap copy of XP Pro so the OS isnt a problem anymore.

Well my friend told me that he build a PC with an AMD CPU and with DDR2 and it worked fine... maybe it's a mobo issue??

Lol how did he do that? AMD + ddr2 = big nono for now (next year it's possible).

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (S939 Dual Core) $517.00

GIGABYTE NX68T256DH GEF6800GT, 256MB, 256bit, PCIEx16, DDRIII8M, DSUB, TVOUT, DVI, TWINV $669.90

^^maybe you should make it 1GB instead of 512MB and make the 6800GT into a 7800GTX

i can get the price lower, because for that quote i used a site that is a tad overpriced.. (because that site has a cool system builder setup)

That looks pretty nice... but I've a few questions...

I take it the Leadtek 7800 GTX will be better than an eVGA 6800, but can I get another and run them in an SLI setup? How much more would it cost?

Does the 'DL' for the DVD writer mean dual layer? What does IDE stand for? I thought that was integrated development environment! lol

How much more would it cost to have 2 x 1gb RAM setup rahter than 2 x 512mb?

And finally whats the real difference between the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ ? Also, is there a way I can compare AMD speeds to P4 speeds? Say, what would 2ghz of AMD equate to on a P4?

Thanks for the replies

So as you can see, to add another video card u will need to upgrade your motherboard.. i would suggest to DFI SLI-DR which is $270, $50 more then the DFI Ultra D listed. Then its another $885 for the card.

If u want 2x1GB PC3200 Ram it is: $354

So total with both the extra video card, sli motherboard and ram is: $4513

The differance between the 4400+ and the 4800+ is that the 4800 is only 200Mhz faste, and you could OC ur 4400 to 4800 speeds easy. 4400+ = 2200Mhz 4800+ =2400Mhz

Wow, thats a tad more pricey tahn I expected.. I'll ask my mate what he can do about these parts and see if he can get em cheaper (he owns a dealership, so he might be able to get em cheaper for me)

EDIT: u changed ur above post... so none of this makes sence :p

no, becuase for a second card its $885.. so its $3369-145-224+885+276+354= 4515

Working^^^^^^^^^

Price quoted without upgrades-DFI Ultra D motherboard - 2x512MB ram+ 2nd video card+ SLI motherboard + 2x1GB PC3200 RAM =

I see.

However, baneful's suggestion of 2 x eVGA 6800GTs seems to be cheaper... but would it give me less or more performance than the 7800 GTX?

Also, I wouldnt have to change the motherboard around so that makes it a little easier.

EDIT: what doesnt make sense to me though, is how the 7800 is $800 while the eVGA is $250 or so...
