So the new IT guy at my work is an ex-computer forensic scientist for a law enforcement agency. We were talking one day about people who erase their "tracks" of what they do on their computers. I told him i use CCleaner, disk cleanup, I empty my online- and off line files and I use Privacy Mantra. I dont' do anything illegal on my computer, i just have always liked having a clean computer once every 2 months or so. He told me to bring in my laptop and he would blow my mind on what he could tell me. I said what the hell and took it to him on wednesday. Well let me tell you, the shit he told me BLEW me away. Hell, he told me that on August 10 of 2003 that I viewed a certain DVD on my computer, and a few other things that I have done. I thought I was doing a pretty good job of cleaning my computer up, but apparently I am not. I know that the only way to really get rid of tracks is to just reformat the hard drive, but are their any other good programs out there that do a better job than CCleaner or Privacy Mantra?

To be honest, even if you shatter the disk, there are ways to get data off of it. Even a reformat can be recovered from. Heck even with enough time and money, you can recover from a random 7 layer over write, which is what the DOD uses as their standard practice. Using tools that read the sectors without looking at the MFT on the disk is all you need to do to see what's there. The data is there until overwritten, but then it's actually still there, just under another new layer of imformation. There is no way to complete erase your information without degausing the whole drive then shredding the media platters and burning them. You can be simply proactive for online sake, but if someone gets ahold of the drive, then you are at their will for what they can get off.

good luck...

loll, if they have access to the hardware, your never safe :p

get a good firewall, and don't let ppl touch your computer, you'll be fine...

use evidence eliminator and as long as you don't view kiddie porn or don't do terroristic activities you will be fine.

the only people that have software dig up past a partition magic secure erase or EE erase, are using it for those activity mentioned above and they usually work for the government

No mlr it can be recovered this was aleready said the only way to completly remove data is to shatter the HD and burn the peices till they melt. This reminds me the data recovery thread awhile back.

like I mention above, the only people who have the software to recover data that had been rewritten and delete more than 10X are people going after terrorists and child pornographers. the rest of the population can't track your activities.

regular and advanced data recovery programs can't bring stuff up that Evidence Eliminator erase or Partition Magic secure erase deleted

Thanks for the info. Like i said in my frist post, i don't do any illegal activities on my computer that i'm trying to hide, I just like to do a little house keeping every once in a while. I used to download music back about 3 years ago, but I do not do that anymore. The IT guy told would not tell me what all he did to look at my computer, he's an idiot like that. Thanks again for the info.
