Is there any way to prevent scandisk from running when I turn on my computer after I do an improper shutdown. I'm running Windows ME.

to get scandisk disabled do this :

Open your registry and find or create the key create a new Binary value, or modify the existing value, called "DisableScandiskOnBoot" and set it 01 to the value data .
Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

once you want to enable scandisk, just set 00 instead of 01.

cheers.

apologize !!!
i forgot the key. here is the key (way to add the value that i indicated before) : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

win ME is a pain when it come to scandisk I had the same problem it would run every time I started my comp whether I shutdown properly or not it turned out to be a bad HDD

you can also add the line AutoScan in msdos.sys :

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).

AutoScan=0

Yes, you can cancel it or disable it (as above), but you really should let it run, at least once after every several crashes, so that it can clean up the bits and pieces.
