start-control panel-system-advanced-performace-advanced-virtual memory-change-set it to 4096 and 4096-apply-dont reboot

Check your msconfig for non-essential programs running at startup.

Reboot

clear up hard drive space too

Indeedy. With a gig of Ram your machine shouldn't be going too mad with the paging file - esp @ startup. Windows will dynamically set the size of your paging file for you by default.

Take a look at remaining space on your C: drive - likely rather low. Also check your event log. If your are approaching the limit on your hard disk space, likely will see a log there. post here if you like.
