Cannot open disk cleanup

im having a problem with the new dell my dad recently purchased..... description he gives: "when running disk cleanup on windows xp - while it is calculating, it stops at "compress old files" and proceeds no further." basically.... when u try to open disk cleanup it gets halfway through the preparation process the stops... and dont reccomend calling dell, did that and they had no idea what they were doing


how do we fix it?

Yup that happens all the time if u keep old compressed files checked
But i dont think it freezes up, it just takes a hell let of a time.
Just try disk cleanup from safe mode. See if that works any better.
 
Heres a great solution to your problem, its great!

Type Regedit in Start - Run
2.Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches
3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Reboot

Always do this before running disk cleanup.

hi do one thing before doing diskclean up try chkdsk /r it will say pc is not able to run it at this moment so u have to schedule it at the start once its done run diskclean up from safe mode
 
its not that are lots of compressed files, this computer is only 2 weeks old
