Building a Server for College Class Project

Just use an old computer. All you need is a connection to your LAN/Internet to be able to host somthing.
5 servers:
Telnet server
Apache webserver
FTP server
WWW File share server
Mailserver

Is that the only 5-server combination possible?

I don't get it, your supposed to shell out your own cash for this? That doesn't make any sense. I had a similar project in school and all the parts were just in the lab for us.

Depending on the needs of the server, you can't go with the cheapest of stuff. For example, if the servers has a database in it that gets tons of hits, you'd better make sure to have a Raptor in there or something. Otherwise, you might be bogged down if there are a lot of requests. Also, if you are supporting a lot of thin-clients, then your server better be damn powerful with respect to CPU and memory.

yeah all very true. i don't see why you will be needing bleeding edge hardware for the purposes your prof. will probably want. hell a website can be run of a p1mmx.
