What could be the cause of my Athlon XP 3200 to overheat to 98 degrees? The case has no cover. Thanks for any suggestions (short of buying a new one)

ummm its 4:35am here so if this post is a little strange bear with me! ok, if you put the cpu onto the mother board yourself did you put on enuff coolent? is there a heatsink? is there a fan on the heatsink? did this just start happening? am i making sence?! hahah

You probably want to check your thermal compound. There's probably too much or none on there. Also your fan might be dying.

When I put the processor in a MSI mobo, it showed only 32 degrees Centigrade. Obviously this ECS mobo is wrong. It showed 98 degrees Centigrade even if newly started. So I have to disable the auto shutoff. Anyway, I decided to return the ECS. Thanks guys.
