im thinkin:
cpu---amd 64 venice 3000+
case---Benz Silver Super Midi 400W silent PSU +USB ATX
ram---Corsair® 1024MB TwinX XMS 3200 C2 Memory Kit (2 x 512MB)

mb im not sure.....this...
-- Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI, nForce4 FSB2000 Skt 939, PCI-E x2, SATA Raid, IDE Raid, Gbit LAN, 6ch Audio, USB2, Firewire, ATX--

or this?...

-- MSI K8N SLI Platinum skt939 nForce SLI dual ch. DDR400 +SATA RAID +USB2 +F/Wire +Gigabit LAN +7.1 ch. audio (up to DDR400) ATX --

given that the gigabyte is £20 cheaper...is the msi worth the £20 extra?

and hard drives i have no clue what im lookin for.....

are these things compatible and good?
and what hard drive would be good for less than sortof £60

cheers for all help

Both those mboards are good. But you dont need a sli board unless you are going to buy 2 vidcards at some point. For a hard drive go with a Seagate SATA or Western Digital SATA drive. Get as big as possible within your budget.

would this be ok for a hd?
40 GB Seagate Barracuda® 7200rpm 2MB Cache ATA100

and with this mb:
Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI, nForce4 FSB2000 Skt 939, PCI-E x2, SATA Raid, IDE Raid, Gbit LAN, 6ch Audio, USB2, Firewire, ATX

can any1 see any issues with the components above and here?
any that r not good?

yes that would work fine, but you might notice a small improvement by getting a sata drive over an ide.

2MB CACHE?!?!?!??!?! you should get one with at least 8MB cache. and i would recommend a sata150 hdd

kk ...cheers 4 all advice an have choosen this now:
80 GB Seagate Barracuda® SATA 7200rpm 8MB cache HDD with NCQ

better?
thx

Yeah that sounds much better, and you can get a 16Mb Cache nowadays (the company Maxtor spring to mind, and some Seagates), but 80Gb isn't that big in todays world. Is there anyway you can ivest some more money and get a larger hard drive? I would recommend 160Gb minimum.

But then I don't know what you will be keeping on your hard drive. Do you have a lot of music and films that you want to put on it? If you do, I suggest a lot bigger than 80Gb.

But it's how far your budget can stretch.

it really just depends on what he wants...and i really wouldnt go with a maxtor drive, just like i wouldnt go with a XFX graphics card...

Why?? I mean we all have our own opinions, but I could say that I wouldn't go with the Crucial Ballistix and Aspire PSU, but then you'd wonder why. I'm just suggesting products, doesn't mean he has to choose them.
