How to perform a Repair Install inWindows XP??

Hi all,

I tried to do a system restore in hopes that it would repair my OS (see my previous post about bad HDD, or mobo...), but my system locked up during the restore and now my computer won't boot.

I'm trying to do a Repair Install from the Windows XP CD. I boot from the CD, choose "R" for repair install and it puts me at the command prompt (after asking for the admin p***word).

What do I do from the command prompt? For now, I'm running a CHKDSK /R to check out my hard drive. Thanks in advance for any replies.

You are choosing the EXPERT repair choice....this will allow an end-user to enter in some commands if they know what is wrong with an installation and repair manually. Try choosing a different automated option when in the repair module.

I ran into this problem with the admin. pa ssword that would not let me through. I solved it by using the 6 XP floppy disks to boot from. This re-installed the recovery console, and that solved the problem. I was then able to do the repair.

when you get into recovery console if you havent set and admin password just press enter. Piece of cake! Use these next commands to repair windows.

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

that should reset windows back to the last working date. Hope this helps
