Thanks I did suspect that but have been a little too unsure to edit it as the syntax is not familiar to me. Here is my boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WDM
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WDM="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

the boot.ini is on C: which is IDE 1 slave and where 98 is

Darren

I've done some more reading and playing and i think that boot.ini is ok as is.
How can I stop the sata controller overriding the IDE drives?
thanks for any advice

i wonder if it would solve his problem by doing a winxp repair. boot from the winxp CD and it will prompt you to press f6 or f8 to repair winxp.
