I have a belkin Ethernet USB adaptor, and also have a NIC card. My friend told me the adaptor is faster. I didn't believe him so I pugged it in and started downloading stuff and it must have been at least 4 times faster on the DL's. Are these USB adaptors really faster or was it just faster due to lack of traffic on the internet and all that junk?

In theory, USB 2.0 ports are faster in burst speeds that your typical 100MBs NIC.
NICs transfer data on a network in serial as do USB....All network traffic is serial....so, it would make sense that they might be faster in burst speeds but as Microbell said, the conflics are so much more minimal compared to USB. Also, on a NIC....once data is at the NIC then it is transferred via parallel, so the data would travel a little faster. You would want to try this at different times of the day.
