DFi Nf4 ultra-D - 132

AMD athlon 64 3700+ - 272

eVGA 7800GTX w/bf2 - 530

OCZ platinum Revision 2 - 169

Seagate Barracuda 160GB sata150 hdd - 89

Antec PERFORMANCE TX TX1050B Black Steel Server Computer Case 500W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply - 139

you can buy another psu if you want but this is good enough if you want to save money
1331 which saves you moeny for keyboard, monitor, mouse, optical drives. or anything else

This is damned good. Don't listen to this if you want to overclock or not thing, the parts are virtually the same. Their's no reason to switch from a good DFI board to an equally priced crappy Asus board if you dont want to ever overclock, like some guy suggested.

One change to this build I would do, is getting larger hard drives, and possibly putting them in a RAID array. This is really up to you, you could be a guy who installs a few games, or a guy who has some half terabyte anime / porn collection.

Having that good of ram in that build is unnesscary. However instead of using a gig, I recomend finding a cheap 2x 1GB kit of ram nowadays with games like FEAR and BF2 using over a gig of ram.

Also, I recomend buying a DFI SLI-DR instead of an Ultra-D if you have this much money. If you want to go SLI, you can with the SLi-DR board

Please consider this one, I spent quite a bit of time on it.

My version of your perfect build. I'm not big on cases and PSUs so choose something from the other's recommendations.

Motherboard - DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR - $198.

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego - $272.

Memory - 2 x OCZ 1GB (2x512MB). - $386.

Hard Disk - Seagate Barracuda 200GB SATA150 -$115.

or

Seagate Barracuda 400GB SATA150. - $256.

---------------------------------------------------

Video Card - If you buy the 200GB HDD you can get a much better video card. If you buy the 400GB HDD, you get more capacity, but a much weaker video card.

The best card - eVGA GeForce 7800GTX with Battlefield 2. - $529. Because you get BF2, you can imagine it being priced at $479. You still get to pay 529 up front though.

The weaker but still respectable card - eVGA GeForce 6800GT - $319.

---------------------------------------------------

Optical Drive - Choose one from this list. Try and make sure that the color of the drive matches the front panel of whatever case you get. - $??

Floppy Drive - Trust me, you WILL need a floppy drive. Most common use is for drivers, and since you get to choose a SATA HDD, you will be using drivers. Besides, why not? Again, choose one from this list and make sure it matches the front of your case otherwise the case is asthetically displeasing. - $??.

If you choose the 200GB HDD and the 7800GTX, the total is $1500 exactly without the case, the optical drive, and the floppy drive.

If you choose the 400GB HDD and the 6800GT, the total is $1431 without the case, the optical drive, and the floppy drive.

If you choose both the 200GB HDD and the 6800GT, the total is $1290 without the case, the optical drive, and the floppy drive.

I recommend the 200GB/7800GTX combo since you probably won't need more than 200GB of space and the 7800GTX will last you for years and years. It also leaves you $200 for the case and the drives. Also, you shipping will really be up there.

Do you want to elaborate on why ASUS make crap boards? Just because ASUS don't overclock as well as a DFI it doesn't mean they are crap. They still have variable options for some moderate OC. ASUS have been good performers throughtout the years go check from anandtech, for instance the previous A8V boards. I personally like both companies, but you fail to realize that DFI boards also have compatibility issues with certain RAMs.

Flanker that price for the ram seems high. He would be fine with these.
And then could get a better processor.

Such as:

Just some more options to think about.

I agree, but I wanted to give him DDR500 for overclocking. Also, I noticed that while the vdimm for the RAM I specified if higher, the timings also also tighter.

Either way, they're both good choices, especially if he wants to save $150 for something else.
