How do you go about changing your fat32 partition to ntfs in windows xp? I thought you did it through disk manager in the mmc but i could not find it in there. I also do not want to lose any data

1. Click Start
2. Select Run from the Start menu
3. Type cmd in the textbox and click OK
4. In the command window that opens type the following:

convert c: /fs:ntfs

(If you want to convert any other drive, change the c: to the drive of choice.)

ok i typed it in and got this message.

The type of file system is fat 32. Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)

What shall i do. It is the partition that xp is installed and running on. Do i have to boot off a dos disk and then do this?

never mind found the answer at microsofts website. but thanks for the help

Oh, I didn't realize that was your primary drive, sorry. Do you have your XP CD? Just run those commands from the recovery console, I don't know if a DOS disk will have that command on it.
