LOL, the guy just said that his top budget is around 3K not 5K!

btw, I don't see why XP Professional would be necessary for him. And that optical drive is a rip off. And he doesn't need a sound card but even if he wants to get one who would spend $160 on one? Why such expensive RAM? He will not be overclocking. Also I think the hard drive setup is major overkill.

All in all I think that system would be a huge waste of money for him.

i just decided to build some really expensive system... ...can i not show what im going to buy:D

the only really good things Dell make are monitors.
asside from that, I think building it is a very good idea. do a google search and you'll see hundreds, if not thousands of guides on how to do it.

one thing that stops people from doing it is the fear of breaking something. in actual fact, the chances of something breaking is quite small, as long as you are careful with static electricity (just touch the case before doing anything)
only USB and firewire headers carry enough voltage to break anything if you plug in the wrong thing. (that's out of the things that actually fit in the wrong place)

I'd get what was suggested:
Athlon 64 X2 4800+
DFI NF4 Ultr-D
Leadtek 7800 GTX
2x512MB G.Skill PC4800 - just put the CPU at 300HTT and 10 multiplier to make 3000MHZ (from 200 HTT and 14 multiplier to make 2800MHZ) you'll get a little bit of an overclock that you should be comfortable with (an extra 200MHZ on the core)
if you don't want to do that yourself, maybe get someone to do it for you.
although that's completely up to you whether you want to go for higher speed RAM anyway.

and I would stick with the onboard sound on the DFI board. it is pretty good quality, and supports 7.1

speaking of that, Logitech has some 7.1 speakers, the Z-5500's. like everyone who has used them has absolutely loved them.
they are pretty expensive though ($278 at newegg)

XP Pro is definately worth getting over Home. it's more stable, more tweakable, and does more stuff (like runs dual cores)

i say get some heatsinks on the G.Skills cause they will be running hot. or you might want to put a fan around there to blow cold air over it

really, so if you burnt them all the way black you can return it, even if you pump 4 volts into them..?

Again... It's not hard to build a system, but some people do not have the money nor WANT to "tweak" their confuser. (it was even said in a previous reply, that he would not O/C) A lot of people want a good system that will last a few years, before getting really out of date... Do you think having DUEL AMD 4800's is that big a deal? the ram, GPU, etc... COOL... but damn... that's some serious money being thrown to something the original poster may not need. Ever. I think even one of those would be sufficiant to quite some time. (Don't mind me, I'm playing devil's advocate here...) In truth I think a real good system could be built, to include LCD Monitor, and speaker system for around 3K USD that would impress most people and still have at least a couple of years before serious upgrading...

Just a thought...

Well hes not getting dual 4800's, that would be something...he was looking at one 4800 dual core processor. But i think i talked him out of it, so he's gonna get a 4000 clawhammer, for $385.

Thanks for all the feed back you guys shaved between $500 to $1,000 off of the Dell system I was looking at. Do I need any special tools to put the PC together. How long do you think it will take a first timer to complete?

EDIT:
Any thoughts on a PSU from newegg.com so I can order everything from one place? I want to make sure that it is 24 PIN, 2.01 and all of that other good stuff I don't understand but you guys have mentioned.

Also do I need to buy any Fans for the computer?

What are your thoughts on that moniter? Should I keep my current or get the new one?

Do I need a floppy drive for setting the system up? Is it wise to get one? Any recomendations or will any work?

Should I get this video card instead - it has better reviews and looks faster?
