How come on some of these old computers when i try to install windows xp i get these error messages cannot install xp because of a I/O DEVICE ERROR(Installation failed D:\1386\ASMS. Also cannot loadc:windows\system\modem cpl. Cannot load windowsystem
netcpl.cpl. Also dot not found in incompatible preinstalled utilities
what does all this mean. The video card is bad Could that be onereason And this was a pentium 3 466 mhz 195 memory
 
Your system should handle XP (though performance will be severly affectd).

The error message sounds like it may be having issues with the drivers for one of your serial ports.

Are you upgrading or intalling it over another OS? Try and disable your serial ports in your BIOS, then re-install and see if it works.

You mean go into bios Select I\O CONFIGURATION and disable all the ports Then when i install windows xp go back and enable all those ports. Also i am upgrading it. Should i choose another choice
 
Yes, I would do that. It sounds like Windows is trying to isntall a driver for one of those ports but is getting stuck. So just disable the ports and deal with that later.
