Power supply problem?

My son's pc just powered off while he was using it one day. Now when I hit the power switch it will try to power on for just a second and then shuts off. Then if I immediately try to power it up again, it doesn't even attempt to turn on any more. If I wait an hour or two and try to power it up again, it will try to power up but, again, only for a second, then it shuts off again. My question is, Does this sound like the power supply or possibly something on the motherboard. It's an ATX ps.

PSU being fried or the CPU had overheated and finally died or something along those lines would be my guess....don't suppose you have an extra PSU you can toss in there to see if it'll work do ya?

Nope, no spare PSU. I may have to go out and get one, I just hope it isn't the motherboard.
