recycle bin in windows ME

Help! Whenever I put a file in the recycle bin in Windows ME, it disappears as soon as I put it in the bin. I have been unable to retrieve any files even before I empty or shred the recycle bin. Double-clicking on the bin icon produces no results; it just says there are no files in the recycle bin. What's going on with that?

I may be wrong, as I don't have a copy of winME around (heh), but right click on the recycle bin and click properties. there should be a setting that says something to the effect of "delete files immediately when sent to the recycyle bin". make sure that is unchecked.

Already checked that one, guys. That "delete files immediately box" was never checked. Any other ideas?
